The Gov and South

April 12th, 2005

I had been following this interesting piece of news since yesterday. 34 deputies would withhold confidence on the government just because it didn’t have any ministers from the south. Now I read that yesterday and thought to myself “If our deputies think like that, then we are in a hole that we are not going to be out from soon”. What made things even more interesting today, is that the Prime minister today said that he “May” make a reformation for the gov to have an “extra” 2 ministers “that the gov don’t need” just to satisfy the geographical considerations.

Now I think this is sad… There are no 2 in jordan that can doubt or even question the qualifications, and devotion ministers and prime ministers from southern Jordan had offered accress the years, but my understanding as well is that when AbdelSalam Al-Majali, Fayez El-Tarawneh, or even Sameer Habashneh agreed to take the government position they did it to serve Jordan, not Karak ! and this is what they actually did. I don’t really understand what are those 34 deputies complaining about, is it that they won’t be able to ask a Minister from Irbid, or Nabuls, or Jarash to get a kid who got 70 in the Tawjihi to Engineering school :) give me a break ! every minister in the Gov is supposed to serve all Jordan, if he is not, kick him out .. but don’t get extra ministers thinking it will make things better, because it won’t, it will be worse.

Shock Pictures for the smokers of Jordan

March 28th, 2005

Now this piece of news made up my day. The ministry of health intends to force Tobacco manufacturals and importers to put shock pictures showing rotten lungs, throat tumors and decayed teeth to be placed on the cigarette packets. This technique, that had been used in Canada for a couple of years now and being introduced in EU, aims to lower the number of smokers by displaying those shocking images of what smoking causes.

Now if a country needs this more than another, then it is Jordan that definitely need it. I can barely have 1 day without having to inhale smoke passively. What’s worse, is that almost ALL my friends are smokers, or became smokers recently which makes me even sadder. None of the smokers I know doesn’t realize that it is bad for him/her .. Hopefully the shocking pictures will make them realize how bad.

Hamdan and Zidane

February 26th, 2005

Few days ago someone shared a link to a short movie that was one of the winners of a contest that is related somehow to the EU. The movie is in Arabic, and some who are into the Jordan TV, and it’s way of reporting will find it funny. I know I did. The movie is by Bassem Nasir, a Jordanian/Palestinian who works at Intel, and the movie won on the contest that had the theme “Intercultural Dialogue”.

I really liked the way it interacted with the viewer through the News bar below, and the predictability of the Interviewer putting in mind that he is doing it the Jordanian way :)

Tell me what you think about it..

Why the tears

February 20th, 2005

Something strange just happened.. While I was having dinner and watching Future Channel on the TV with my sister. I saw her staring at the TV, with tears in her eyes. That was during some flashbacks, and the clips Future had been showing for the past days for the late Rafiq Al-Hariri. I was surprised, why would she cry ! I know that she is a girl, and is allowed to cry on anything (including movies and so) but it had already been a week for the tragic event, and my sister never cared about politics and people of politics. Why would a 17 years old (what !! she is 17 already !!! ) girl cry about it ! There are 10s of bombings in Iraq everyday, and 100s are killed every month, no one cares.. Is it because of Rafiq Al-Hariri ? No one can deny that he was a great person, but probably if we follow the story of each killed number or figure in Iraq or Palestine we would find a great person on his/her level that was lost in a tragic event.. What is it ?

I can play dull all day, but it is the power of media and TV. The great coverage and clips and flashbacks that Future TV is doing is helping in massively increasing the sympathy and polishing the image. This brought to my memory a recent piece of news I read about a Swedish Ad that enraged Italians.

This doesn’t mean that I don’t think that what happened to Rafiq Al-Hariri was ugly and a great loss, and that he is indeed a great person.. but I am not sure that this is the reason my sister cried.

Personal Privacy after Death

February 19th, 2005

I stumbled upon an interesting piece of news. It seems that a Palestinian mother is asking Yahoo! for the password for the account of her deceased child who died in a bombing of Rafah last year. She says that in his Yahoo account he left a message and a will to her mother. As well there are pictures and photos that she would like to have access to. A similar story happened few months ago when a mother of an American Dead Soldier asked Yahoo for her son’s password.

I got into discussion about this with an online friend of mine, she thinks that the mother have no right to access her son’s account, while I see no harm. For example if the dead son had a closed closet or drawer, would anyone say that the family have no right to open it and look into it.. or look under his bed ? I am not sure, but for sure that doesn’t sound weird or odd for me.. What do you think ?

Alexander, The American way

December 25th, 2004

I just came from the cinema after watching Alexander. As you may have guessed from the title of my post I didn’t like it much. There are lots of things that are wrong in the movie, to start with, why did Alexander’s army, and many of his friends speak English with an Irish or Scotch accent ?! does it my any chance have to do with Braveheart ?! or Macedonians and Greek at that time talked in an Irish or Scotch way !? I wonder.. And what’s it with Angelina Jolie’s accent ? Olympias (Alexander’s mother) was from Epirus, northern of Greece .. and not from Northern Russia ! what is it about ? why did she talk in this fake way !

Now, Beside the stupid choice of accent different characters performed in, the movie was far from being Epic, not even close.. The way the wars were shot was as if they avoid showing the war in a big picture .. war shots were close-ups, avoiding showing large scale war scenes.. Now to the part I hated most.. According to the movie, Alexander was after opening Persia to “Free” them .. even more, Alexander used the word “Freedom” in his war speech to soldiers at “Battle of Gaugamela” and used it after it during one of his gay conversations with “Hephaestion” .. Now everyone knows that Alexander was never after “Freeing” people, and “Freedom” .. he was after Glory, and it was what he was remembered for .. using terms such as “Freedom” and “freeing” and so for Babylon and Persia (that is Iraq and Iran those days) reflects the current American media speech, and the same terminology used after the war in Iraq, when they found out that there are no weapons of mass destruction they started the “Freedom” talk.. Oh Come On ! Alexander had tens of slaves, what freedom are you talking about in 330 BC !!

Now beside that, there are historical errors as well in the movie .. Alexander saw 2 of his sons in his live .. Roxana, which in the movie was still pregnant at his death, did have Alexander IV, in the same year he died .. and Alexander had a 4 years old son from a mistress when he died…

I am not sure what was the point of this movie .. Was it entertainment ? or is it historical documentation ? either way I found it to be insulting for my inelegance..

I don’t Look like them !

June 6th, 2004

Well, for the past days, because of the extra security measures taken by the authorities in here, I got into Police Checkpoints 2 times, and in those 2 times, the police man looks at my face, without even fully stopping the car, and he instruct me to move on. So, I guess I don’t look like those they are looking for :) that is good news for me..

now I had been in the new house for 3 days, things are now really close to what I can consider “Good”. Something that I still miss, or maybe I don’t really want, is a TV. I passed by many stores, and I got good prices, for good TVs, and I have the money for it (payed by the company) but for some reason, I am thinking about getting my self a nice book, and spend the time reading instead of the TV. I may regret that in the weekend I guess :) as in the weekdays I barely have time for Extra things. Anyhow, I went yesterday to Jarir, and did not find anything that may interest me. I will look in other bookshops, or online to see if there is something that I want to read.
