August 25th, 2005

I’be been seeing this sign for sometime now, and I wanted to take a picture and share it (click to see larger):

Translation: The “Weapon Corner” Shop (GunShop) would like to Congradulate all the University Graduates, and Those who passed Tawjihi and Shamel (two state-run exams for high school)

Now I am glad that this summer people used fireworks to celebrate more than they did for guns, and it is getting used more and more for weddings. Although the guns are still dominant in the Jaha and Lunch events related to weddings for many reason, upon them that fireworks doesn’t make sense in daylight.
I think they should create a method to make loud blast voices, while maintaining the dignity of the hosting and visiting families, to use instead of the gun power in the Jaha and lunch events. Maybe then, we will have a gun-free celebrations

Blogs and Jordan Planet in Alghad

August 22nd, 2005

I was surprised to see an article about blogs, mentioning Jordan Planet in Al-Ghad when I woke up today. My father was reading it when I saw it. Ammar Ibrahim was interviewed about it by the newspaper. Way to go Ammar :)

Aqaba Bombing

August 19th, 2005

I woke up today to the news about bombing in Aqaba, some news channels say it is 1 explosion, other say 3, some say it was targeted at an American ship in the port, while I heard some say that it was near the city, I heard that at least one Jordanian was killed from the bombing… I don’t know what to say.. why can’t we just live peacefully.. what is it that they want to prove ? why Aqaba ? why Jordan ?

What would hurt me the most is that we will find out that it was Jordanians who did it.. what a shame..

Update:: It had been confirmed that one of the rockets hit the yard of Princess Haya Hospital, which is near the entrance of Aqaba city. While the other hit a warehouse in the port used to store Rice and Sugar. Jordanian soldier Ahmad Saleh died, while another soldier is now in hospital

Crazy week

August 12th, 2005

I’m home again, it was a very wild and crazy week for me, and I loved it. Not everything went as we planned it, but it was fine anyway. I spend 2 nights in Berlin at my cousin’s, and I loved the city. It had this mixture of modern and old that I adore in the European cities. I hope that I will be back there soon, to see more of Germany, but I doubt it will happen soon ..

Back to the work and office, I have tons of work to do, but you know what? I am fresh and ready for it.

German Tour

August 8th, 2005

Well, Wikimania is over.. It was all just perfect, everything was great about it in a way that I didn’t expect. In an hour I will be starting a tour in Germany with my new friend Isaac Mao to the southern part of Germany. First we are heading to Baden-Baden where we plan to enjoy the Black Forest which I wanted to see for a long time. Then we are going to Fussen rest a little, and visit the great castle of Neuschwanstein. It will definitly be a looong day. And tomorrow I am leaving early morning to to Berlin, where I will be spending 2 nights.
The great thing about all this is that all this was planned on the spot, and was never part of my plans when I came here.. but for sure I will not miss it.
Another thing.. I used my Flickr account for the first time yesterday :) You can check some of the pictures I had taken at my page in flickr.

In 20 miuntes

August 7th, 2005

In 20 minutes I will be giving a presentation in the Wikimania about reasons of the slow development of Arabic Wikipedia. Now although this is not the first time I give a presentation, this time I am a little nervous. The hall we are giving the presentations in is large, and the number of people coming is not small at all. I hope it will go all well..

The last 2 days it had been more than great. I was taking a look in the Wikimania Tag in flickr and it seems that there a lot more people that I could meet in 4 days. There are some really nice pictures there. Give it a look, and wish me luck.

Here in the Wikimania

August 6th, 2005

Well.. Thanks to the people from the OSI, I made it to the Wikimania. One major thing about being here is meeting the people behind the nicknames that I knew for the last 2 years in Wikipedia. Meeting Elien, Jimbo, Danny, Anthere, SJ and others were part of the reason I am here, and I can say that I am really having a time of my life.. add to that meeting people that I am talking to for the first time, but yet having those really great talks and discussions.. and if there is one thing that I enjoy more than internet surfing, then it is definitly talking and writing :).

Today was day 1 for the events, and because I managed to have some sleep yesterday, I was able to function and participate today. The topics covered are really interesting.. it is hard to select which session to go to as we have 4 or 5 sessions at a time. My session is supposed to be in Sunday, so I better finalize the slides tomorrow.

Frankfurt turned out to be a smaller city that I expected, but definitly a really beautiful one. I guess having a river in the city adds that special thing. Sometime I wish Amman had a river.. or even a lake.. or a swamp (natural ones).. anthing :)

I am talking non-sense, so I better get some sleep. Good night all
