The Downfall
A couple of days ago I watched Der Untergang (Downfall), now I am not into German movies in general (maybe I only saw a couple, including Run Lola), but I really liked this one. The idea of having the last few days of the fall of Berlin as the set of this movie was interesting enough for me to watch it. I can’t tell if the movie was accurate or far from being accurate when it comes to history, because I am not into that really, but I hope that it didn’t give a disfigured image of those days.
The thing about this movie that I liked the most was that a topic such as WWII was presented in so many ways, angles, and viewpoints. But having a closer look into how things were around Hitler in those lase few days was something that I didn’t see before. What the movie succeeded in was mostly showing Hitler is a human, with lots of anger, being under stress, being betrayed, being punishing, and at last in the doorstep of death. Maybe it will take 30-40 years for us to see such movies about the last days before the downfall of Baghdad, I hope I will be around by then.
I heard some controversy about the movie, namely because of its protrayal of Adolf as a human. You seemed to like it. I will add it to my Netflix queue now. I trust you opnion. After all, you are the coolest Jordanian ever born! (I told you I am going to amsi7lak jookh)
-Run Lola-
“Same incident from different angels and
different views”
It was one of the best I ever watched.
And I’ll see if i can manage to watch “Der Untergang (Downfall)”
I swear mish mase7 joo5 like some people :D
I must agree with your opinion. I am living in Germany (not German though) and the movie greatly affected me.
Here in Germany there were many different opinions about this movie (mostly people didn’t like Hitler’s portrayal iyas mentioned). It is not completely historically accurate (that nice doctor who tried to help everyone was actually a mean Nazi) but nevertheless the viewpoint is interesting and different from most WWII movies one has seen.
Glad to see other enlightened Jordanians! The movie is an accurate portrayal of the last days of the Reich- and its controversial because of its portrayal of Hitler- not for the facts. If you are interested on published sources: The movie is based on the book “Inside Hitler’s Bunker” by Joachim Fest that is meticulously researched study of the last days. You can also read “At Hitler’s Side” by Von Below who was Hitler’s Luftwaffe Adjutant, and the original 1946 account by Hugh Trevor-Roper “The Last Days of Hitler”
BTW, Here are some German movies that I own and you might enjoy (other than LOLA): DAS BOOT, MOSTLY MARTHA, ALI: FEAR EATS THE SOUL, FREE RADICALS
